Tighe model #4 brass microscope

With a design that is aesthetically integrated, this microscope stands 11 1/4" high in closed position, and is signed: "E.H. & F.H. Tighe, Detroit, Mich." in compact block letters on the stage. It has a rack and pinion coarse focus, and a fine focus control knob uniquely situated beneath the limb, just above the stage. All controls work perfectly. The microscope has a single nosepiece with one, divisible lens that is marked: 1/6 and 2/3. Removing the front element reveals the second lens. Both lenses are in excellent condition. The circular stage has a sub-stage condenser with a variable diaphragm. The concave mirror swings on a compass joint that can position the mirror above the stage for reflected illumination. The mirror itself has minor age spotting on its edges. A single eyepiece fits into an adjustable length tube. The entire microscope is finished in lacquered brass. The finish is nearly 100% with minimal spotting and some wear on the stage and base. The microscope is housed in its own fine box-jointed wood case with brass carry handle. The unmistakable Tighe design profile has an architectural sculptural quality that make it most sought after by collectors. For comparison, see the Tighe #5 stand elsewhere in this website. This is a particularly fine example of a superbly proportioned American instrument.
